Spot Reduction Revealed: A Little Waist and a Body Transformation by Jean Jitomir

Hi Jean,
How did you transform your body? I feel like my upper body and waist are the parts I need to whittle the most (although I know you cannot really spot reduce) and you look like you did that. what did you do? How long did it take? What was the mindset that got you to actually do it? Thanks, CB

Jean Jitomir

First of all, let me begin by saying that there is no way to "spot reduce" by doing 8 zillion crunches; however!  Women are scientifically proven to be better at building muscle in the legs and have a much harder time building lean mass in the upper body.  This distribution of muscle is all related to hormones and their recognition in the body, so you may need to spend more days per week on the upper body to get it to respond in the way that you would like!
There is evidence to suggest that regular cardio training will preferentially remove belly fat, if that is where you hold it.  Also, diets that are high in fat and especially ALCOHOL greatly increase intestinal fat, which give one a bloated belly look.  That said, I drink a small amount of wine (2-3 oz) most days in my off-season.  Regular "social" drinking, which should really be defined as "binge" drinking, will expand your belly faster than eating for two!  I have had countless clients with excellent diets and horrible drinking habits!  This is also one of the issues I had when my "before" picture as taken.  It was right after my freshman year of college and a good deal of partying!  To get flat abs, the diet must be moderate to low in fat and calories-- drinking any more than one (woman) or two (man) must be completely eliminated!
Beyond a clean diet and limited alcohol use, a transformation depends on sound and consistent training; you should constantly stay excited about your workout and vary your routine.  If you are just beginning to get into fitness, do ANYTHING that motivates you to move-- it may be as simple as dancing in your room or strolling in the park.  Moving, especially outdoors, will make you feel more vibrant!
Honestly, I was personally motivated to change my buffalo-wing pizza gorging ways after coming home from my freshman year.  I had been athletic in high school, but got depressed at an Ivy League college, where I was no longer a stand-out.  I had several immensely talented and brilliant people around me and no longer felt confident in myself.  I lost site of my own strengths and goals during that period.  When I came home for the summer, one of my high school friends had gone in the opposite direction; she was doing well in school and she was in great shape!  We started going to the gym together again that summer and I evolved from there.  I started to develop my own training programs-- though they were primitive, I was consistent and improved anyway!
Have a plan; be consistent; stay motivated-- you will reach your goals!
