20 Question with Cover Model Samantha Kelly

Samantha Kelly

1) Please introduce yourself? What makes you special?
Who is Samantha Kelly?

Hello, my name is Samantha Kelly and I am a fitness model and a business owner in Las Vegas, Nevada. I grew in Portland, Oregon where I was always active outdoors with sports and leisure activities. I am a very strong, passionate woman and put my heart into all that I do in my life. Love and laughter get me through each day no matter what comes my way.

2) Please tell us a bit about your family, friends and surroundings?

I am very blessed to have family and friends that are very supportive and go out of their way in anyway they can to help me with my endeavors. Not to mention put up with me when I am dieting.

3) How did you get started in the fitness industry?

I started off going to fitness shows in support and awe of the female competitors. This drove me to wanting more out of my training and I pushed myself to do a figure show. In prepping for my first competition I met a well known photographer whom loved my look and wanted to shoot me for magazine submissions. We did just that, had a very successful first shoot and my photos were picked up by Planet Muscle Magazine. I have been fortunate enough to continue a promising modeling career.

4) How do you prepare mentally for a photoshoot? And
physically? What do you eat? How much sleep do you need?

Mentally I go into a shoot thinking it's all for fun. It's so important to convey that in pictures. I love genuine emotion. Physically I make sure to stay on top of my training and my diet. I usually do split training with my weights and cardiovascular. My diet consists of a lot of fish, salad, oatmeal, egg whites and I make sure to drink a gallon or more of water to keep my skin tight.

5) What would be an idea you have always wanted to do for a photoshoot but have never been able to fulfill? Any other ideas and settings?

I would love to shoot in a tropical setting with waterfalls in the background. Wearing a white dress that is wet and clinging to my tanned body!

6) As a model what are some things that you believe make a you a professional and that photographers like?

I make sure to show up with my body tight and ready to rock "n" roll! I also come prepared with a lot of outfits and themed ideas for the shoot. I find this a great way to start off a shoot with my photographer, so we can bounce ideas off of each other as far as creating a sexy mood for the shoot.

7) What is your typical training routine in the gym (per day, include sets and reps!) How much cardio do you do?

On a split day my first workout consists of 30-45 minutes cardiovascular, usually spin bike. My second workout a warm-up of 20 minutes stairmaster. I do a lot of supersets for weight training to keep my heart rate up. Depending how hard I hit my legs I may finish up with 30 minutes more cardio work. Sometimes cardio or abs in between my supersets to keep myself moving. To keep my glutes in tip-top shape I do a lot of single leg work and high reps. Lunges, step ups, single Leg Press, and Hip-extensions. For hamstrings I do wide and narrow straight leg deadlifts. Supine hamstring curl with a swiss ball. Abs, calves and cardio I do anywhere from 5-6 days a week. My cardio I like to change up each week. I spin, run, do the stairmaster and jump-rope! I Love it all!! I'm like a female Rocky in the gym!

8) You competed at some shows before why did you stop?

I have competed in a couple of shows and as great as it was it just wasn't for me. I love to model and look how I want to look. I find I enjoy the creativity in fitness modeling and there is still fierce competition in that! There are so many beautiful female fitness models I admire and I am thankful to be published along side many of them.

9) What else would you like to do to expand yourself as a model? Any acting in movies, theater or TV shows?

I would love to land a role as a female action hero. So to any movie producers reading this make sure to contact me!

10) What motivates you to train/diet and model? Are there any competitors/models you looked up to?

I have always looked up to Monica Brant, Trish Stratus and Amy Fahdli. These women are a true inspiration to me because they have amazing feminine muscle and photograph beautifully.

11) Please tell us an interesting experience you had at a show/photoshoot recently, be it a fun thing or something rather not so fun?

My best friend whom is a fitness model and photographer, Jennifer Chamberlin recently shot me at a girlfriends house. We had an absolute blast. She was shooting me in the master bathroom that had a gorgeous Roman tub with marble steps going up to the tub. I was dancing and singing Tina Turner, " I'm Your Private Dancer" on the top step to the tub in the tiniest string bikini you've ever seen. Too bad we didn't have video that day! I can be quite a ham on shoots!

12) What is your personal opinion about the figure,
fitness, bodybuilding industry we are in? Anything you would like to see changed?

I find that the competitors devote so much of their time, energy, blood, sweat and tears into their sport! I would love to see more consistency in what the judges are looking for. I personally could never judge a show because I would want everyone to win! I know how hard they all work and the sacrifices made in their daily life to be a competitor. I'm hoping that fitness will attract more competitors as well. I know a lot of the girls are going with figure now due to the expense of outfits, choreography, etc. Plus, you have to have a strong background of gymnastics and for those whom do not they are at higher risk for injury. However, with all of that it is always so exciting to watch! They are amazing!

13) What has been your hardest challenge to overcome
either in your personal life or competing/modeling career?

The hardest thing for me to overcome is the fact that I am actually quite shy. So, the first time I stepped on stage I thought I was going to have a heart attack! What a rush! I felt so proud of myself that I did it. Plus, I placed 2nd in my first show ever. Not too bad, although, I still wanted 1st! And that is a true competitor for you.

14) What do you look for in a man? Both physically and
mentally?

I look for passion, strength, intelligence, ambition, sense of humor and loyalty. Physically I love strong legs and glutes! I also love a great smile and an infectious laugh.

15) In a relationship are you the communicator? Are you the one that takes control or you rather sit back and relax?

I am a bit of both really. I think there is time to take the reigns and a time to sit back and enjoy the ride. As far as communication I try as much as possible to share my feelings.. but hey, no one is perfect.

16) Do you feel men are intimidated by you in the gym,
grocery stores, etc..? What is an easy way to strike conversation with you?

I find some men are intimidated by me. Then there are the men that show admiration for my lifestyle, which I love. I think it takes a strong women to be so dedicated and disciplined however, inside we can be very soft and have a huge loving heart! Humor is a great way to start a conversation with me by the way. Make me smile and laugh and I am all ears. Don't ask me how much I can lift! lol

17) Please tell us about how you were raised and did you have any interesting experiences while growing up?

My parents were very strict with me. My Dad taught me if you're going to do something, always do your absolute best. Put your heart into it. My parents also didn't allow any sugar in the house while growing up. Infact for holidays I was only allowed carob chocolate! Yuck! So, I think a lot of my discipline with my diet comes from the fact that it's just not a big deal to me. My clients love when I tell them food is fuel, not a party! What I consider cheating on my diet is a salad that has a dressing on it that I like or my favorite, Sushi.

18) Do you have an athletic background? Gymnastics,
soccer, volleyball or what?

Softball, volleyball, and some gymnastics. I even played baseball on an all boys team in the 3rd grade! I love baseball!

19) What is a typical day in the life of Samantha Kelly? From waking up to until going to bed?

I have to say I am a creature of habit due to my fit lifestyle and especially when I have photoshoots back to back. My diet is clean year round except for the occassional cheating. I try to get to bed at a decent time each night because I get up at 4am each day to go train my clients. My work day I usually do is a split. I will train 5 clients (5 hours) in the morning and then take a break to do my first session of cardio, shower then go back to work and train a few more clients. Then I am off to the gym again for my second workout. I usually eat 6-7 times a day so that keeps me busy making meals! I also try and make time for my friends but usually I have to see them on weekends. I love to go out and rebel from time to time. One of favorite things is to go dancing! Hey at least I’m still burning calories! lol
