20 Questions with Cover Model Alaina Nealon

Alaina Nealon

1) Please introduce yourself? What makes you special? Who is Alaina Nealon?

My name is Alaina Nealon. I am a US Air Force Veteran and have a beautiful two year old daughter named Keira.

2) Please tell us a bit about your family, friends and surroundings?

I come from a big family of three sisters and one brother. All my sisters are older and my brother in six years younger. I enjoy being the baby girl.

3) How did you start competing in figure?

I became interested i competing while stationed in Hawaii. I started weightlifting about six years ago so it only made sense to me to take it to the next level. I always knew i wanted to do figure because i liked the way they looked.

4) What is your personal policy (not what the judges want) about conditioning and muscularity when coming into a show? Soft or hard?

My personal policy was to not come in too muscular but still look conditioned. I wanted to have a balance of not too hard but not too soft.

5)  What is your idea of what judges want in a Figure competitor? Do you think judges are clear enough with competitors about how they want you on stage? It seems in Europe they are very clear unlike in the USA and now in Canada things are confusing.

I competed in four shows in 2015 and from what i gathered the judges are all over the place. Some want you bigger and harder while others want you smaller and softer.

6) For the next shows what do you think you need to work on physique-wise/conditioning-wise? If anything!

For my next show ill be working on my back width. I need to make the illusion my waist is smaller than it actually is. I also will work on my over all conditioning.

7) What is your typical training routine in the gym (per day, include sets and reps!) How much cardio do you do before a show?

I don't really have a typical routine. I get bored easily so i like to change things up. I also like to throw in classes such as plyo and bodypump.

8) What is your pre-contest diet? (per day, 1 week before the show)

My contest diet a week before show consists of about 0-25gramsof carb while also taking in 150g protein and 25g of fats. I start to carb load a couple days out from show.

9) How do you go about dropping your water before the day of the show? How much water do you drink the day of the show. Please be specific.

I start dropping my water by 1/4 gallon about two days from show. Depending on what time i go on stage for pre judging will determine how much water i drink the day of show.

10) What motivates you to train/diet and compete? Are there any competitors you looked up to?

What motivates me during prep in my sister. We do all our preps together so we keep each other in check. We push each other through every workout and every meal. Someone who i have always looked up to is an old friend Angie. She helped me get started after having my daughter two years ago. She is also a mother of two and i have always admired her dedication and accomplishments.

11) Please tell us an interesting experience you had at a show recently, be it a fun thing or something rather not so fun?

I think the most interesting experience i had while competing was that i did it with my sister Angela. We are both mothers who have a passion for fitness so being able to check that off our bucket list together was a great experience.

12) What is your personal opinion about the figure, fitness, bodybuilding industry we are in? Anything you would like to see changed?

My personal opinion of the bodybuilding industry is thats its  big popularity contest. Like most things it seems to be very political. Id like to see that change.

13) What has been your hardest challenge to overcome either in your personal life or competing career?

The hardest thing to over come while competing was to find a balance. I am a mother and have a life outside of bodybuilding so i had to find that balance and not let prep consume me.

14) Did you make any changes to your contest prep for your last show? Water intake, carbing up, etc...

My contest prep was consistent through all my shows.

15) What do you think of bikini division?

The figure division is my favorite obviously. It has a good balance of muscularity and femininity.

16) What are your favorite foods to eat right after you compete on a Saturday night?

Right after show my favorite foods to eat are anything that has buffalo sauce on it. Also a whole bag of oreos!

17) Please tell us about how you were raised and did you have any interesting experiences while growing up?

I would say i was raised in a "normal" household. I have a big family who enjoys spending most of their time together.

18) Do you have an athletic background? Gymnastics, soccer, volleyball or what?

I played softball in high school but thats about as far as my athletic background goes. I was more interested in ROTC which lead me to join the military. Thats where i found my passion for fitness. Most likely because i had no other choice.

19) What is a typical day in the life of Alaina Nealon? From waking up to until going to bed?

A typical day is not so typical. Raising a two year old and helping my sister with her identical boys can be hectic at times. We try to get them out as much as possible while working around our training routine and work.

20) What is your current occupation? Please tell us more about it, what do you specifically do in your job?

After getting out of the military i became a Police Officer in New Mexico. After moving back to Florida i took some time to be home with my daughter. Im now in the middle of changing my career fields and working as Golds Gym.
